One Cup
Posted by colleen at about 12pm on Monday April 14, 2008One Cup is a short documentary filmed in Timor-Leste in January 2006 by Scarab Studio & Mutiny Media of Australia. This film attempts to offer insight into the struggles of coffee farmers in one of the poorest countries in the world. José Ramos-Horta, then Prime Minister and now President of Timor-Leste, and Keryn Clark, OXFAM Program Director, are interviewed in the film.
One Cup illustrates the positive benefits of fair trade while giving the viewer a glimpse into the challenges of coffee farmers in this lovely island nation. Unfortunately, the 29 minute long film does not delve into the actual reality of the fair trade system in Timor-Leste. Instead, One Cup chooses to focus an ideal fair trade system that so many of us hope to support while consuming products with that sweet little seal of certification that is supposed to guarantee us a product that is 'fair' to the farmer who grew it. The film is so generous to the current system of fair trade in Timor-Leste that at some points I even began to wonder who was actually behind its production. Although in my opinion One Cup does nothing to actually research or investigate the reality of fair trade in Timor-Leste, which is not nearly as nice as it may appear on the surface and from a distance, it is a lovely reminder of the ever increasing need for change in the way that we consume and trade across the globe.
How sad that now more than ever fair trade is becoming just more business as usual.
Our Contracts
Posted by matt at about 3pm on Monday December 17, 2007This page has been on our site for some time, but we thought it would be good to update it and put it back up front-- especially in light of the excellent discussion going on on our "Map of Our Supply Chain" story.
Our adherence to international Fair Trade standards is audited by our organic certifier Midwest Organic Services Association (MOSA). However, to keep you all totally in the loop, we post all of our contracts, organic certifications, etc. on our importing co-op's (Cooperative Coffees) website for you to peruse.
Please feel free to check them out here.
There are 4 types of documents featured in this section: Contracts (CON), Invoices (INV), Bills of Lading (BOL), and Organic Certifications (ORG). These can be a little confusing, so here is a brief run-down of what they are all about.

1st annual ASEAN Trade Expo
Posted by colleen at about 2am on Wednesday December 5, 2007
Last weekend, December 1st and 2nd, was the 1st annual ASEAN Trade Expo here in Dili, Timor-Leste. It was a wonderful event! Many groups and organizations from all over the country came to Dili to display and sell their local products, crafts, and services to both the local and international community of Timor-Leste. The local NGO that supports the Gardeners of Eden East Timor Seed Project, Fundasaun Hari'i Au Metan (“Foundation of the Black Bamboo,” a species of black bamboo native to Timor-Leste), built an awesome booth from locally harvested and treated bamboo and then filled it with a variety of products from groups we work with all over the country!
