Just Coffee places 2-5 on Madison Magazine's "Green Hero" List!

green belt

Just Coffee Cooperative was selected a whopping 2-5 in a list of Madison's "Green Heroes" in the April edition of Madison Magazine. We were recognized for our fairly traded coffee and our use of Fair Indigo's cardboard boxes.

JC shares this honor with Terra Experience, SERRV/A Greater Gift, and Chiripa-- all excellent Madison-based FT businesses.

Today I feel more like a number 4, but we could easily be a number 2 as some have suggested. 3 and 5 work well and together add up to a pleasant 8, so they are cool as well.

Thanks to Mad Mag for thinking of us and hats off to all of the other businesses on the list.

who's the new employee?

and do y'all wear these new uniforms now?

Congrats, I think...

The story you link to is really strange. Madison Magazine picked your company and three other fair trade companies as second through fifth out of twenty-five "green businesses". Not only do they not bother to differentiate which of you are what number, they also give only the most cursory mention as to what you (and the other companies) do. It is as if their in-depth profile of Fair Indigo somehow covers it for you. All of the other businesses, numbers 6 through 25, get a really nice write-up and pictures to boot.

This is very odd. And frankly, it smells like number two to me.

Odd, it is...

The article IS odd, especially the 2-5 ranking which sandwiches several of the local fair trade organizations together. I guess popular vote can choose where we want to place you...I'd move Just Coffee above Fair Indigo, personally. BUT you did make hero status, which I guess puts you up there in the ranks with the HULK, Flash Gordon, and Wonder Women.

I think they could have at minimum included a catchy picture of Just Coffee next to the mention. My personal favorite is the Just Coffee Family Holiday Photo. If you haven't yet seen it, check it out here:

Happy Holidays from the JC Team

I don't understand..

Yep, I mean what self-respecting magazine wouldn't want a photo of Rob McClure milking Mike Moon at a holiday party?

Sheesh...

Setting the Record Straight

Hi Matt,

It's Chloe's mom (and Mad Mag editor Brennan)... About the whole Green Heroes... it wasn't a competition or a ranking or anything like that. We worked with Jen Garrett to determine what people, businesses, ideas we loved. There was absolutely NO chronological order--we'll leave that to the green goddesses and their salad dressing. We simply had a finite number of pages and made it our job to tell readers who we think they should know. Madison is really, really lucky to have a business like yours. Thank you for all that you do. (And hi to your wonderful family, again).
Brennan

Hey Brennan

We are really pleased with making the list. We do like to have fun (mostly at ourselves) with anything that we show up in in the press.

Like I said in the article above, we are happy to be mentioned by you all and to be in the company of all the other great businesses.

Take care and a big shout out to Chloe from Lula!

setting the record straighter

The main gripe I have heard from just coffee customers is that it was obvious that Just Coffee was at best an after thought - and apparently no one from just coffee was even spoken to for the "blurb" -- yeah the only thing they do that is "green" is using FI's boxes...
not quite....
what about
100 % fair trade
bike delivery
reusable buckets
reusing others waste cardboard
paying living wages
health benefits
helping schools and local orgs raise money ..by selling Fair Trade Coffee
work with producers in other countries to help improve their communities ..

I think the "ranking" was not as important as the fact that your mag didn't even take the time to find out why they should be listed -- or bother to tell the readers
